Security... If your computer is connected to the Internet, even if only for a few minutes, it will be attacked. The Internet is a wonderful resource, but unfortunately there are people who will advantage of the open nature of the Internet. They can damage your computer by installing virues, worms, trogans and spyware - without your knowledge! You MUST have protection, and fortunatley there are many free resources that can offer such protection. These free programs will stop most attacks, but the commercial versions offer much more. If you do not have protection, your computer then your computer probably has already been attacked. Your computer will slow down, send viruses to everyone in your email address book, invoke pop-ups while you browse the Internet (often to porn sites), and even hijack your computer to store their files and distribute them! All without your knowledge! |

Must Have programs... Firewall: If you are using XP, install the Service Pack V2. This includes a basic firewall and pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer (IE)*. However,a better solution is provided by Zone Alarm. The free version is good and the Pro version is better. In Google, search for "Zone Alarm" and download either the free version or pay for the Pro version. Insatll the firewall first. Anti Virus: One of the best free solutions is provided by AVG, by Grisoft. Again, in Google, search for "AVG anti virus " and download either the free version or pay for the full version. Run the anti virus program next. Anti Worm / Trogan / Spyware: One of the best free solutions is Spybot Search & Destroy. Again, in Google search for "Spybot Search & Destroy" to get the latest version. Run Spybot next and follow the instructions and advice. |
Must Have programs... *Browser and Email: Using the free "Firefox Mozilla" browser is considered to be safer than using IE and Outlook (Express). This because hackers seem to like targeting Microsoft. Using Firefox's built in email program is also a good idea. Again, in Google, search for "Firefox" to get the latest version.
